How to Study in South Korea for Free (Without GKS)
Most international students think the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is the only way to get a fully funded degree in South Korea.
Because everyone applies for GKS, competition is fierce, country quotas are strict, and thousands of highly qualified applicants get rejected every year.
Here is the secret: You do not need GKS to study in Korea for free.
There is an entire ecosystem of direct university tuition waivers, professor-funded research assistantships (RA), and national project stipends that will cover 100% of your tuition and pay you a monthly stipend to live on.
The 4 Main “No-GKS” Funding Routes
Instead of competing against thousands of applicants for a single government grant, you can tap into these four direct funding avenues:
1. Specialized STEM Research Institutes
South Korea has top-tier government-funded research institutes designed to build global scientific talent. When you get accepted into these universities, funding is usually automatic.
- GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology): Offers 100% tuition waivers for eligible international graduate students, plus a monthly research allowance and health insurance subsidies.
- KAIST (Daejeon): Covers full tuition for admitted students via KAIST International Student Scholarships, alongside monthly living allowances.
- UNIST & DGIST: Offer similar full-tuition coverage paired with laboratory stipends for STEM degrees.
2. Direct Professor Lab Stipends (RA / TA Positions)
In South Korea, professors in STEM, AI, and engineering fields receive large research grants from companies (like Samsung, Hyundai, or LG) or government ministries.
How it works: A professor acts as your “employer” and supervisor. In exchange for working on research papers or industry projects in their lab, the professor pays your tuition directly and gives you a monthly salary (often 800,000 KRW to 1,500,000+ KRW/month).
3. BK21 (Brain Korea 21) Project Grants
BK21 is a massive national research project funded by the Korean government to support graduate students.
- Who gets it: If you join a department or research lab that holds a BK21 project grant, you automatically receive a monthly government allowance (minimum 700,000 KRW for Master’s and 1,300,000 KRW for Ph.D. students).
4. Direct University Merit Scholarships
Even general universities like Seoul National University (SNU), Korea University, and Yonsei (SKY) offer internal international scholarships:
- SNU GSFS (Grand Scholarship for Foreign Students): Covers full tuition for up to 4 semesters plus living expenses for select graduate students.
- University Merit Waivers: Many universities grant a 50% to 100% tuition waiver for your first semester if your GPA or language test scores are high.
